Abnormalities Found In Gene For Melanoma

New research from the Oregon Health & Science University Cancer Institute about mutations in melanoma may bring a wellspring of hope to many patients.Researchers have discovered that there are several different kinds of DNA abnormalities that can occur in a gene called the KIT gene. These abnormalities are associated with different kinds of acral and mucosal melanomas, which are less common, but highly malignant forms of skin cancer.

Rapid Wound Healing

In Germany alone, about three million - mostly elderly - patients suffer from poorly healing large-area wounds caused by complaints such as diabetes, burns or bedsores. The wounds can be treated with conventional collagen dressings or polylactic acid dressings, but the success rate is not as good as it should be. A new type of dressing made of silica gel fibers, developed by scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC in Würzburg, shall solve the problem.

Researchers Take Hard Line Against UV Exposure - Hundreds Affirm Harmful Effects Of Ultraviolet Rays, Discourage Intentional Tanning

Researchers have expressed concern over a new campaign initiated by the tanning industry, which seeks to dispel the link between melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, and UV exposure from natural or artificial sources (such as tanning beds). In response, nearly 500 of the foremost experts on melanoma signed a statement affirming the existence of evidence-based data demonstrating the harmful effects of UVA and UVB radiation.

Provectus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Begins Phase 2 Clinical Trial For Atopic Dermatitis

Provectus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (OTC BB: PVCT) has begun Phase 2 clinical testing of PH-10, the company’s topical drug for dermatology, for the treatment of atopic dermatitis, a chronic skin condition that includes some forms of eczema. The study is designed to evaluate efficacy of PH-10 in a total of twenty subjects with mild to severe forms of the disease. In the study, subjects will apply PH-10 daily for up to four weeks to their skin areas affected by atopic dermatitis.
