Acne is the bane of many peoples' lives. Particularly adolescents. Having bad skin can make you feel really miserable and sometimes it seems like it's just never going to go away.

So what a lot of people do is to experiment with all kinds of home treatments for acne. Sour milk or yoghurt, mint leaves, strawberry leaves, vinegar, garlic... it's incredible what some poor folks will put on their faces in the hope that it will get rid of those pesky spots!

But generally, experimenting like this is a mistake and could end up doing more harm than good.

The problem with trying out all these different home remedies and experimenting with different ingredients in this way is that you have no way of knowing beforehand if the stuff you're putting on your face will alleviate your condition or whether it will bring you out into a spotty rash.

Another mistake people make is in thinking that all commercial acne products are the same and that they all contain chemicals. This is not the case. There are various commercial products you can buy for treating acne that are made of all natural ingredients.

There are quite a few advantages to buying such a product instead of plastering your face with some home-made remedy. First, they usually come with instructions so you know how much to apply, how often and when. Second, they've usually been through some sort of testing, so there is less chance of you having a wild allergic reaction (although it still remains a possibility so always read the label!). Third, they are often clear and free of the odours that you might get with some of the more exotic home remedies like garlic and vinegar!

Of course if you discover a home remedy that works for you, that's great! But be very careful when experimenting with any new ingredients. You want your skin to get better, not worse!
