Comedones, commonly known as blackheads, are little plugs that clog the skin's pores. This is a result of overactive sebaceous (natural skin oil) glands that fills up the pores with oil. When this happens, the sebum harden in the pores, and since it is exposed to the air, the oil oxides--turning black. As the top of this oil plug gets pushed closer to the surface of the skin, the unsightly blackhead becomes visible.

There is no clear explanation of why these oil gland become overactive. However,it is common for blackheads to emerge during adolescence when puberty begins. Typically, blackheads tend to cease after the teenage years due to the hormones normalizing, but this is not always the case. Blackheads, whiteheads, and other acne-related blemishes may occur well past puberty until adulthood.

So what can you do if you suffer from blackheads? List below are the basic blackhead removal steps you should take for clearer skin:

Keep the skin as clean and clear as possible. Dead skin cells and oil is quick to accumulate, so you must make sure to clean your face several times a day. You can use natural or gentle-formulated cleansers, astringents, and masks (particularly clay mask) for the best results. Stay away from harsh cleanser that may further irritate the skin.

Exfoliate 2-3 times a week. Use a gentle, microbead exfoliant to slough off the dead skin cells, and keep them away from the pore openings.

Never pop or squeeze a blackhead with your fingers. It's actually best if you avoid squeezing your blackheads altogether. This can cause permanent damage to the surrounding skin, further enlarging your pores. If you must squeeze, use a proper blackhead removal tool or seek help with a professional.

Use pore strips sparingly. Pore strips can come in handy and are effective at removing blackheads. However, be sure you read the directions thoroughly before using any strips.
